DISTRICT 3

Who is Lori Drake?

I am the only Republican running for the Yavapai Board of Supervisors seat for District 3. I won the Republican Primary in July and did so without any big money donations from industry, businesses, or individuals.  I am here for the people of District 3 and not owned by or indebted to anyone.

I have conservative values, but I am also a commonsense pragmatist and realist.  I will work with the entire Board of Supervisors to find the wisest collaboration and solutions that support District 3.   I will bring my years living in the district and my respect for this community to all issues.

I am a fourth-generation Verde Valley resident, born and raised in Cottonwood.  My parents, John & Susanne Verretto raised three children and built two successful small businesses here.  They taught me the value of challenging work, treating others with respect, always keeping my word, and supporting our community.

I attended Cottonwood Elementary school and Mingus Union High School just as my parents did.  I participated in 4-H from an early age as well as sports.  After one year at Yavapai College, I attended DeVry University to become an accountant.  I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Operations in 1992.

My husband and I have been married for over 31 years and have two amazing daughters.

I first volunteered at the elementary school when our daughters were students.  As they grew older my focus turned to the Mingus school board meetings to gain a better understanding of their education policies.   That led to my decision to serve on the Mingus Union High School Governing Board starting in 2016.   I have been committed to learning as much as possible about public education and its funding to better advocate for my constituents.   I am dedicated to everyone involved in education, especially our children.

Lori’s Values

I am the only Republican Candidate running in this race.  I believe in our small-town lifestyle, supporting law enforcement, carefully controlled growth, rural community values, taking care of our natural resources and keeping government small.  I am against any form of governmental overreach.

Lori’s Experience

As an engaged Yavapai citizen, I have served the Cottonwood community in the Mingus Union High School District for 8 years as a board member and a substitute teacher.  I care about the people who live in District 3 and want to expand my role in public service.

Serving the Community

I am running for County Supervisor because it is important to stand up for, advocate for, and protect this area and the people who call it home.

I will serve the people who depend on the Yavapai Board of Supervisors by standing up to promote District 3 and the values it espouses. I care deeply about preserving our rural way of life.  I will make the hard choices and always do the right thing by listening to the people I represent.  Transparency, community outreach and communication are key elements of my role as County Supervisor.

Public servants should be focused on serving the public.

Where does Lori stand?

  • Water is precious here and should be conscientiously conserved.  I am not in favor of metering private property wells.  I do believe coordinating efforts with the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) that manages water for the state is important. I would not be in favor of creating an additional department within the county, because this would duplicate the job ADWR is already doing.  I am not in favor of creating an AMA for Yavapai County. Pulling away rights from the State of Arizona could trigger decades of lawsuits for Yavapai County.  Trying to control the water use does not provide us with more water resources.

  • My commitment to city law enforcement and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is steadfast and will help them keep us safe.  They are working diligently to keep border trespassers and crime out of our community.  Making sure law enforcement has the personnel and equipment they need to successfully do their important jobs is an absolute necessity to keep us safe locally and from national border issues.

  • I encourage thoughtfully planned growth in our community and recognize that growth is important.  Our communities are growing whether we like it or not.  We must direct that growth wisely and carefully considering our future needs.  That includes focused attention to the wise use of our natural resources and water.

I will create opportunities for small businesses to flourish and meet the needs of our citizens.  While tourism and small business are important to our economy, we also need to provide high paying jobs.  To that end I will work to ensure strong opportunities for our citizens to prosper.

  • I have always believed our citizens deserve to have their issues addressed promptly regarding capital improvements when they are needed.   The people of District 3 should expect to see their taxes put to work where they live as well as across the county.

  • We must be thoughtful about how the entire community will be impacted when planning and developing new infrastructure projects, such as state highways.  I intend to explore more efficient ways to address the traffic problem in the Village of Oak Creek.  We must provide an alternate route into Sedona that would not be detrimental to the citizens of Red Rock Loop Road.  State Route 179 was originally planned as a four-lane highway. We need to explore whether four lanes or an alternative plan would work better and mitigate the impact on the people in the area.  It appears the State does see the need for improvement. This is a perfect example of why careful balancing of the needs of people whose homes are affected and what works best for the community is so critical.

  • The Verde Valley has been affected by mining contamination, resulting in concerns about public health risks. Ongoing testing and remediation efforts are being addressed.  Contamination in the Verde Valley is from decades long copper mining operations. While the mining waste of the past is being addressed, it is of the utmost importance to be cognizant of the health and safety of our citizens.

There are water toxicity levels associated with mining contamination and processes to restore our waterways. We must bring transparency to the people affected by mining contamination and keep them aware of the process and status of solutions.  As Supervisor I will advocate for the resources to mitigate these health and safety issues.

  • Preserving our rural values and self-reliance were concepts formed by our original conservationists, the farmers and ranchers who have practiced and refined both.  We must be diligent to keep these values in our mindset and community plans.

  • Yavapai County owns the Sedona Airport which is run by the Sedona Airport Authority.  I am supportive of the current operations. I have toured the airport and believe the many amenities currently offered help our community travelers and tourism in Sedona.

  • Outside of our city limits, short-term rentals are under the jurisdiction of the State of AZ.  It is important to protect the health, safety and security of the citizens living in the areas which are inundated with short term rentals. Our Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office hopes to open a hub in the Village of Oak Creek for faster response time to this and other issues.  I will work to bring resolution to this situation.

  • It is important that the citizens of District 3 have a voice in our county wide comprehensive plan. This document should continue to be updated and be relevant to each of the cities and towns within Yavapai County and citizens must have input on it.

  • Slag Pile Mining operations are under control of the State.  It is of the utmost importance to the health and safety of the citizens within District 3 to be protected during the remediation process.  Health risks must be addressed and dealt with.

  • We must update our flood control plans to consider the changing weather patterns here.  Some of our residents are being inundated with runoff from flash flooding which can include garbage, chemicals and oil from the outdated drainage system.  As Supervisor I will seek strategies that will protect our community from runoff and keep our area clean and safe.

  • Important funding for the Sheriff’s office to provide enforcement of OHV rules was before our legislators last year.

While I want OHV enthusiasts to enjoy the area, it must be regulated for safety and conservation.

It is important to stop the damage from overuse and provide for the health, safety, and security of the citizens and wildlife in the area. We must also protect our natural resources from irreparable damage caused by recreational overuse so we may continue to enjoy the beauty of our rural landscape.

  • It is important to assess services for our youth and aging citizens. We can do better for our youth and retirees.

Most young people here struggle with activities, their social lives, and finding job opportunities to stay in the county. Our aging communities are finding it difficult to afford retirement here due to high living costs, inadequate healthcare, and cuts to local services.

As Supervisor, I will seek solutions to these issues and help each of these groups have better lives.
